Mysuru: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has made internship mandatory for all the engineering students from this year, said Anil D Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, AICTE.

Speaking after inaugurating “Fresher’s Day” of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) at its campus here on Tuesday, he said, “Degrees will not be awarded to students who fail to do internship.” He also mentioned that just 25 percent of the students in the country were taking up higher education, of which just 4 percent belonged to the engineering stream. He also mentioned that faculties should get updated about new technology by participating in the faculty development programmes and impart the same to their students.

"Technology is changing rapidly. Whatever they learn during their four-year engineering course will be outdated by the time they complete the course. So students should cultivate the habit of self-learning on the new technologies. Students should not attend classes for the sake of getting attendance. They should attend the classes to learn. Students should not get restricted only to their academic subjects but also cultivate the habit of learning other topics including going through 'Swayam', free online education on various topics, which has been initiated by the Government of India", he said.
