Last date to file I-T returns has been extended to August 5
Today will not be the last date to file income tax returns for the financial year 2016-17. The original deadline was July 31. The new deadline is August 05.
The reason behind the extension is because the government's e-filing website is experiencing overload. The Income Tax Department has already received over two crore returns filed electronically.
The department had earlier issued advertisements in leading national dailies in the last few days stating that taxpayers should disclose their income "correctly" and file their ITRs on or before July 31. The IT department had on Sunday also said that the last date of July 31 to file ITR will not be extended.
