The Opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accord priority for intra-State river linking programmes as it would save the farmers across the country and the projects would also solve many inter-State water issues.

In a letter to Modi, DMK working president and the leader of the Opposition M K Stalin said the river linking projects would also bring complete harmony in relations among the neighbouring states, which will further strengthen national integration and its development.

"I am writing this letter only to seek your kind intervention to achieve the inter-State river linking programme mandated by the Supreme Court", he added.

Citing Apex Court's judgement on river linking schemes, Stalin said while explaining the importance of river linking project, the court had issued sixteen directions so as to take this project forward to fulfil the ambitious programme.

"The entire objective of the river linking project can be discerned from the above silver lining of the judgement of national importance", Stalin said.
